Open Letter To Pennsylvanians

 Pennsylvanians are in a battle.
The outcome will ultimately shape democracy in our state. It's a battle
between we the people and a Governor that  has aligned his administration with the gas industry. Together, they are the propellant that has ignited a full scale assault  on our democracy. Our voices are being systematically denied.  From local townships stripped of their zoning authority, to doctors
being muzzled, to regulations written by lobbyists favorable to  industry under cover of darkness.....all  this and more threatens our way of life and the democratic process.

The stakes cannot be higher. And all Pennsylvanians should understand that rights are being usurped by  a rapacious industry aided and abetted by a compliant administration.  How can a state known for its "liberty bell" stand by and watch the Corbett administration tear up the constitution and hand over control  to the gas interests? They tell us that allowing this industry to operate freely, with minimal regulation, will create vast employment opportunities and economic well being. That is a  smokescreen.

Studies show the economic benefits accrue to the few, and are  temporary at best. Huge dollar flows are no doubt occurring, but benefit a narrow band of industry "insiders" and downstream operators  who do the industry's heavy work like trucking, hauling, excavation,  land filling and waste disposal. Most of the top tier workers  are imports from other states.

What is not temporary is the devastation to air,  water, health and property values. No one in Corbett's
administration speaks to the fact that as more land is seized by  the industry, more of our environment is degraded. And no one in his  administration speaks to the enormous economic consequences of
diminished wildlife habitat, polluted streams and rivers and toxic air  on our tourist, hunting, fishing and farming industries.

And clearly, the threat to public health and the associated costs have yet to be determined.  The fact is Corbett and his administration believe they have no need to speak to anyone but the industry they have partnered with and to their own inner circle of industry insiders. Together, they are attacking the most essential rights in our democracy.....the right to a voice in matters  affecting our lives. This administration must be held to account for  violating this basic human right.

When you say seized by the industry, I guess paying a landowner $5,000 an acre for a lease and then royalties on the gas that is produced is considered seized?

I guess the millions of tons of coal that are burned have no effect on that air or health you speak of?

How is it that Bradford County, the hub of activity, has the lowest unemployment rate in the state. Seems to me there are plenty of jobs for local people. Those that want to anyway.

Just another environmentalist pushing an anti-gas agenda.

The only thing that has destroyed pennsylvania and the rest of the country is the democrats and their anti everything (except bigger government, more welfare) agenda!

9:35:00 PM What's got his feathers ruffled is landowners accepting $5,000 an acre to lease, allowing the industry to pump millions of gallons of water laced with neurotoxins and carcinogens
into the ground, producing radioactive, chemically laden waste which is partially filtered and dumped upstream of people's water sources.

hahahhahhahahhahahhahhahhahahhahaha
They lied to you and YOU don't even realize that fact.

The republicans flip flopped, sold you out...
After the industry made huge campaign contributions ...they took away local government control with the passage of act 13. Made a mockery out the republican party....republicans,small government...hahhahahhaha!

Well said, I agree with you both 9:35PM and 10:12 PM!
There should not be any CDL drivers drawing unemployment in the Commonwealth of PA, get off your butts and get a job cause they are there for the taking!

To 10:12

What has destroyed this country and democracy is not a political party. It is that WE THE PEOPLE have allowed a group of career politicians, lobbyists and big money interests to become the government. We no longer have government by the people, for the people, we have government by the biggest payoff, for the biggest payoff, and we the people get whatever leavings are dropped from their tables.

When it's all said and done, the handful of landowners making big bucks will be living elsewhere, where the air and water are clean. If they're smart, they're already gone.
What will be left? That's right, no one knows, but it WILL have something to do with all the chemicals and crap the gas industry is shooting down these wells, because it aint going nowhere except into the water supply.
To the idiots of 9:45, 10:12 and 6:40 that disparage people who like clean air and water, I say this: If you really think it's the Democrats complaining, you're the guys who entered a battle of wits as unarmed men.

So you think the farmers who have been trying to eek out a living here for the last 50 or 60 years have suddenly moved away because they finally made a few bucks ? get real! I guess you would rather buy all your gas and oil from the middle east, it seems to be working real swell so far!

Thank you Mr. Roter,for
writing this letter and for your efforts to help raise awareness
to the health, safety and regulatory issues
associated with shale exploration which are in need of addressing.

Be assured,the numbers of citizens
who share many of these same concerns are steadily growing.

These citizens will
affect change.
Change in policy and
eventually change in elected officials.
Officials that
have chosen to do little to address the environmental health and safety risks, preferring to put their efforts and public resources into industry job training and promoting Pennstate's and the industry's rosey Marcellus rhetoric.

Oh give it a rest it Mr. Roter. They have been drilling gas wells for decades. Somebody step on your toes. I'll bet YOU consume your share of heating automobile fuel, don'tcha?
